What to Look for in a Patio Contractor

Choosing a contractor is the single most important decision in any hardscape project — more important than the paver color or pattern, because the right materials installed badly will fail regardless of how good they look on day one. Here’s what we’d tell a friend to check before hiring anyone, including us.

Check Credentials & Experience

Ask how long the contractor has actually been installing pavers, walls, and drainage systems — not just “in business,” but installing hardscapes specifically. Ask if they’ve completed projects with the features you’re considering, whether that’s a pool patio, a fire feature, or a permeable driveway. We’ve been building patios, driveways, and outdoor living spaces throughout Wellesley and MetroWest Boston with direct experience across pools, kitchens, pergolas, and walls — not just flat paver fields.

Review Their Portfolio

A contractor confident in their work will have plenty of completed projects to show you, ideally ones similar in scope to yours. Ask if they offer design services and what that costs. Does their style match what you have in mind?

Assess Real Workmanship

Ask to see a project that’s at least two years old, not just recent work. Fresh installations always look good — the question is how the cuts, joints, and edge restraints have held up. Look for clean, tight joints and edges that haven’t shifted. Ask directly whether they warranty their work and if they’ve had warranty claims.

Ask About the Crew

Some contractors subcontract out specialty work like lighting or irrigation. That’s not necessarily a red flag, but you should know upfront who’s actually going to be on your property and how those subcontractors are vetted and managed.

Understand Jobsite Preparation

This is where projects actually succeed or fail. Ask what base preparation methods and materials they use, and why. A contractor who treats base prep the same way on every job, regardless of soil, grade, or drainage, is skipping a step that matters — especially in New England, where freeze-thaw cycles punish shortcuts.

Get Clear on Schedule & Payment

How far out are they booking, and how long will your project realistically take? What are their payment terms — is a deposit required, and how is the balance structured? Vague answers here tend to predict vague answers later.

Read the Fine Print

Confirm proper licensing, liability insurance, and workers’ compensation coverage for employees. Ask whether your project needs permits, and who’s responsible for pulling them — you, or the contractor. This is a detail homeowners skip and regret.

Trust Your Gut

Do you actually like and trust this person? Will the person you’re meeting now be on-site day to day, or will you get handed off to someone else? A quick reference check is worth the ten minutes it takes.
